Château de Mayragues
In unspoilt rolling wooded country-side, the Chateau de Mayragues is situates in the heart of Gaillac vineyards, not far from the large national forest of the "Gresigne", 4,5 kms from the medieval hilltop village of Castelnau de Montmiral, 10 kms from Gaillac in the valley of the Tarn and 25 kms from Albi. Built in the 14th to 16th centuries of the local limestone, it is one of the few surviving examples of the regional fortified architecture with its half timbered, overhanging gallery running round the whole of the top of the building. Inside, a splendid 17th century decor with painted cellings and large chimneys in stucco bear witness to a rich past. Also of interest is the picturesque dovecot standing on four stone columns and typical of the Languedoc region.
Situated on the South West facing slopes of the right bank of the Tarn, it is close to the large oak forest of the Gresigne. The terroir is a mixture of chalk and clay, with a micro-climate benefitting from the influences of both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic.
2 spacious comfortable rooms of great character in the Chateau. Installed in the independent cottage which formerly-housed the bread oven the Chateau, the Gite has its own shaded south-facing terrace.
Mayragues is an ideal base for walkings tours, and there are many cultural and sporting activities nearby.
