Château de Vaulserre

A fortress transformed into the "Château de Couleurs".

In the 16th century the Vaulserre family chose a hill in the Guiers Valley as the site for their estate, and their descendents continue to occupy the chateau today. Overlooking the border between the Dauphiné region and the kingdoms of Piedmont and Sardinia, the chateau originally formed two wings in an L-shape with a corner tower and a drawbridge. In the 17th century construction added a north wing to the chateau, giving the chateau a U-shape. The gardens were transformed in a traditional English style.

For the next century decoration on the interior continued, and the chateau was transformed into a pleasant eighteenth century residence with the destruction of the fortification walls and the installation of a vestibule in the former courtyard. Elegant trompe l'oeil mural paintings in tones of yellow, pink, gold and brown depict the kings of Sardinia and the King of France, Louis XV, facing each other across this magnificent entry hall.
